Top notch dive school

Simply put, there is no Koh Tao for me without Big Blue Diving.

There are many dive schools to choose from but from you know Big Blue is on point when it gets so many of its customers through WOM. That is why I chose to come here since it has been highly recommended by so many others. I was not disappointed! While Big Blue is one of the bigger schools, the instruction is still personal. Groups will never be more than six people to one instructor. As for me, I was quite lucky and had a stellar group of six as well as two awesome instructors!

Now my two instructors were Tim & Luke, who were complements to each other and assisted tremendously in our group's development as divers. Tim, our main group instructor, is to the point when it comes to dive instruction and while he may be blunt, it pushed us as a group to work harder. Luke, our second instructor, is extremely patient and gave us extra encouragement by sharing loads of tips and personal stories with us.

Together, Tim & Luke put a lot of time and effort into making us better divers. Personally, I struggled with one of the skills in the course and they both worked with me individually to make sure I got it and was confident with it. They were great at noticing how we as individuals could improve and it was clear that their main goal was to make us good and more importantly safe divers! These two were a DYNAMIC DUO and it only speaks well on the quality at Big Blue.

If you choose to dive with Big Blue, I am sure you will love your time with them as much as I did. :) Thank you Big Blue, Tim, & Luke!

P.S. Shoutout to Barry, who is the best videographer here!

Really nice vibe and great diving!

We were three guys diving for our first time. We were lucky to have two instructors, since one was an intern. Great guys and great instructors. They were really chilled out and fun, but serious when it came to the diving. We came to do only Open Water and ended up with an Advanced Open Water Certificate. The advanced dives were cool, especially deep diving in Chumphon and the wreck dive. Ko Tao in general was awesome. Nice people and and a good vibe. Take trips to other beaches like Ao Leuk!

Very professional and well run

I had Lotte as a diving instructor, she was amazing! Highly recommend her. The big blue diving resort is very professional and organized. One improvement could be the lodging. The bathroom was not cleaned once when we were there. It is good if youre looking for somewhere cheap to stay though. OVERALL AMAZING EXPERIENCE! Cant wait to go back

Great week and super value for money

Did the Open Water and Advanced course with BB - had a brilliant time and thoroughly recommend. On dive days you can have free accommodation in the dorm room or discounted private room. We paid just over $300 for both courses (April 2014) which is still one of the cheapest we have found anywhere (we have since dived in Vietnam, Philippines and Malaysia) Had Swedish Kris and British Rich as instructors - they're crazy but good fun and have a good mix of professionalism and laughs. I had some problems with my sinuses during the OW course and had to take a couple of days off - Rich offered to take me out and dived with me one to one which was great and really helped me pass the OW, after which i gained much more confidence and was able to go straight to Advanced course. And even if you don't dive there, the bar and BBQ food is great. There are two BBs on the beach (same company) BB1 is the lively one where we stayed, BB2 seems to be quieter and is where the swimming pool is located for first days training. Thanks Kris and Rich for top week!

Nice and professional instructors but center too commercial

Everybody was very friendly, passionate and professional.

Lots of staff available. Good dive and equipment.

The deal is great for Open Water.

But all along the stay we were pushed to buy more, do the advanced certification, buy all the equipment even if it is obvious we don't need it.

The video was quite embarassing as the guy did a great job and it was nice but as we were all students we don't have 2000THB which is a huge amount for a short video. He insisted, almost begging...

Their job is great, and after discussion we all said that many people would have brought it if was affordable.

So it was a great stay but I still feel being a wallet in this center

Great experience

Quality and price good!

Instructors excellent

Equipment is a bit much use

Environment excellent

Just to say that if a full group is planning to do open water and advance. Maybe the video should be record at the advance time cause there are better spots.

I love big blue!!

I had an absolutely incredible time with big blue. They were the one company on the island that had a dedicated boat for "fun divers," which was the original reason I went with them. I am so happy I did, what an awesome place! The location is prime, right on the beach, and I spent countless afternoons sitting at the restaurant chatting with new friends and sipping fruit juices. The diving is professional and the staff is excited and passionate about what they do. They could take a dive with crappy visibility and still find awesome things for you to look at. If you get a chance to dive with Steven, take it! He is amazing! The vibes on Koh Tao are so relaxed and if you are looking for a diving getaway, I would definitely recommend. Only negatives I can think of were that we had a really bad night dive that probably wasn't the safest, ending in a 25 minute surface swim against the current back to the boat. Of my 13 dives with big blue, I'm bummed that there was one that stuck out in my mind as a bad dive.. Also the free dorms are pretty shocking, but they are free so you can't really complain.

Unprofessional

We had to end our class early because my buddy had trouble with the swim test. Yes, that was on us, and we were happy to pay for the small amount of instruction we had received up to that point. But instead of helping us wrap things up well, Big Blue demanded additional money from us, beyond what is explicitly and clearly written in their posted refund policy, and would not return our passports until we gave them more money. Really disappointing and unprofessional behavior.

Pick the Winners

I have been training and diving with Big blue Koh Tao on and off for about a year now.

I have also tried other outfits but I keep coming back to Big blue.

I feel safer because they are true professionals and I will even let my kids train and dive with them.

They are worth every penny

Great diving but alternative accommodation was poor

The diving was excellent and the DMs were great. However, when I booked a private, fan room and heated shower, and this was not available when I arrived, I was placed in an alternative accommodation - the AJP hotel. The room was not at all nice - the bed didn't feel like it had clean sheets, there was not even a sink in the bathroom. This does not reflect well on Big Blue if this is a recommended alternative accommodation. I was glad to move out to one of BB's own private, fan room even though this had no heated shower. At least this had obviously clean sheets and a sink.

Finally, the cost of the all day trip (3 dives, breakfast, lunch 3800THB) seemed quite steep compared to the half day trips (about 1400 THB). And it didn't count towards the number of dives (and therefore the final cost of the dives) I did during the week.

Small classes and helpful guides

I was glad to see the class sizes were small, despite the many people you'll see working at Big Blue 1 and 2. Great place to learn to dive and to fun dive as well. Free dorms are a great asset. Definitely a party vibe here, but you don't have to partake.
