Incompetent staff

Did the hours in the classroom. Got 100% on the test. Did the day in the pool. Did my first dive. Second dive we went down to 12meters and i was asked to fill my mask which i did. The instructor asked me to do this twice, upon the second time i freaked out! Unfortunately so much so that i took my mask off and my Regulator out and decided i was going up to the surface. Obviously taking the regulator out was ridiculous but i was in a state of panic and clearly wasnt thinking straight. i just knew i wanted to go up. The instructor took me up to the surface and after checking i was ok asked me to go and sit on the boat whilst she finished with everybody else. (I must state that things were all great up until this point. I was happy with the way she dealt with it - I have no complaints so far). As soon as i came up to the surface i was fine, i had swallowed alot of water but after sitting on the boat for 15minutes i was fine. When the instructor came back onto the boat she didnt initially say anything to me. Maybe around 5minutes later she came to me and gave me the option of going back into the water one-on-one to complete the final skills. She wanted me to go down to 5meters and half fill my mask twice, Fully flood my mask twice and take off my mask entirely twice. The other divers did not need to do this but i understood that i needed to show the instructor i was competent in order for her to sign me off.

I told her that i was nervous to go back into the water so soon so when we got in could i just try to fill and clear my mask slightly under the surface. (If i could do it successfully on the surface it would right things in my mind and it would reassure me that it would be fine to do it deeper) She had told me this was ok. When we got into the water 5minutes later and we were left alone as the boat had gone back to the shore with all of the other divers, this was no longer the case. She told me that there was no time to waste and we needed to go down to 5meters now and complete all 6 of the mask filling skills PLUS the some other skills the other divers had also completed earlier. I told her i wasnt comfortable going straight down and i just wanted to try filling my mask just ONCE just under the surface to reassure myself. She told me i looked scared and that if that was the case then i wouldnt be able to do it. She also said that 'its just water'. And that it was going to be dark soon so we have to go down NOW. I told her again i wanted a few minutes to try the half filling my mask skill on the surface before we went down. At this she told me there was no time, and she wouldnt take me out tomorrow (with everybody else) because it was her birthday and she wanted to enjoy the dive, and that she wouldnt take me out the following day as she was planning on being hungover so if i was still here on Monday she 'guessed' that she could try and take me out then. At this i said that i could stay a few extras days if it meant i could complete the diving course however i asked whether my partner who was also in her group with me could complete his also on Monday with me and she had said YES.

At that point we both swam back to the shore, and after clearing away and cleaning the equipment she decided that in fact she wouldnt let my boyfriend come with us on monday and that he would have to complete his tomorrow (Saturday) otherwise he wouldnt be able to complete it at all. She told me to get my partner to confirm that he would be diving the following day with her, as she would be sat at the bar for a while. Upon hearing this i was very upset, i still had alot of water i had swallowed earlier inside me. i was upset that she hadnt been more sympathetic/patient and professional towards me. I went back to the room and explained everything to my partner (whilst in tears due to the way she spoke to me) He immediately went to speak with her, he asked if he could speak with her privately (as she was sat at a table surrounded by other divers and instructors drinking beer) She had said 'no, im too tired, just talk to me here'. He told her that he wasnt comfortable completing the diving without me and that he wanted to join me on Monday like she had promised. She said no, she wasnt going to do that as it would take longer on Monday and she TOLD him that he would be doing it tomorrow. He had tried to explain to her three times that he wasnt ok with this arrangement and she had dismissed him completely in front of everybody.

After that we immediately checked out of Big Blue and checked into another hotel. The following day we collected out passports from reception and neither of us completed our diving.

Overall i was disgusting by her professionalism and her attitude. What i havent mentioned is that the day we had in the swimming pool she had also upset another diver who dropped out of her course and joined another instructor. He English was good but he found it hard to listen to her as she used alot of slang and jokes. She was unbelievable rude to him and actually shouted at him in the pool 'OOOOH GOD (his name) YOU NEED TO WORK ON YOUR LISTENING' . After half of the day in the pool he decided to leave and as soon as he left she had said 'Oh thank god hes gone, is anyone really that fucking thick??' I am not at all surprised that he was upset or that he dropped out of her group.

Unfortunately, both me and my partner live in Chumphon. The expats in Chumphon had already warned me not to go with Big Blue as it has a reputation, however we are young and we thought that diving with Big Blue would be fun (as my sister had dived with you a few years previously) and were very excited about completing our diving open water so that we could go diving on a weekly basis. We bought our own masks in the Big Blue shop and we were very serious about this becoming a regular hobby. However, due to one incompetent insensitive instructor we are 9000BHT out of pocket and two very upset customers who certainly wont be recommending you to passing tourists in Chumphon.

mass diving school, with shifting dive site plans

I did four dives with Big Blue Diving in March 2014. I said I would really wanted to go to Chumphon Pinnacle, so they said I could come the following day. But we went to Southwest Pinnacle instead. I only found out when we where already there and I asked why we where there so fast. On another day they said we would go to the Japanese Gardens, but we went to the other side of Koh Nan Yuang without anybody bothering to tell us.

This and the way the dive instructors did their talks gave me the feeling I was just seen as one of the many many customers, so that felt quite massive.

The free bed you get when you dive at Big Blue is in a not so clean dorm room.

Excellent diving school, subpar hostel

The teachers and dives I engaged with during my training at Big Blue were great. However, the accommodations and staff at their hostel was less than appealing. The cleaning staff repeatedly disposed of some of my possessions, thinking they were garbage (a full bottle of sunscreen is garbage?) and when I confronted them about it they were less than enthused to help. At night, a number of the dogs kept by some of the more permanent residents become quite territorial, and I almost had an encounter with one on my way back to my room one night from the locker area. I recommend Big Blue diving school to anyone, but stay elsewhere on the island to save yourself a headache.

Diving

I had Tristan as my instructor, he took me through my open water and advanced course. He was a great instructor who I felt very safe to dive with. Definetly recommend any one to go big blue to learn to dive or jus go diving with.

Couldn't recommend it enough - Great school, ask for John!

I'd been wanting to try scuba diving for a long time and so had big expectations! Big Blue Diving is one of the biggest schools on the island but feels very personal, friendly and welcoming. They have all sorts of courses on offer from taster sessions to full SSI / PASI courses. I brought my boyfriend along and we both ended up doing two courses in the end although we had only intended on doing one. Our instructor John was fab, he was very patient, calm and knowledgeable and made us feel very safe (even on our scary night dive). There were four of us in our group so the class size is nice and small. By the end of our courses we couldn't believe how fast we had progressed and how much we had learned. And most importantly what we got to see under the big blue sea was simply amazing - an experience of a lifetime. So if you choose BIg Blue ask for John and you'll have a wonderful experience.

excellent

This was one of the best experiences of my life. It is a 4 day course in which you are thoroughly trained and prepared for the open water dives you will encounter.

Even if you are scared of the water, the instructors will be with you every step of the way to make sure you don't get into any trouble.

Cracking value for money also.

Great course, great instructor, great time

Intended on doing just my Open Water. Stayed for my advanced as well. Had the best instructor who was a great blend of humour, professionalism and care. If I could go back and do it all over again I would in a heartbeat. Not the best accommodation I've stayed in but for free, I'd have taken anything. If you're looking for a cheap but amazing option to either fun dive or train, then you should definitely choose big blue, I had the best time.

Social Diving School

I'm not used to large diving companies or groups, having about 30 dives completed with most of them from liveaboard / small island / remote locations.

Initially was a bit overbearing, but got used to that and the style for which you operated. I think to be young, single and out to party and meet loads of people is a perfect setup. For me a bit older and past that pat of my life, it was still good in all.

Generally speaking everything was good, the diving, the sites, the groups I was paired off with, the DM's and staff overall were great, making the trip more enjoyable, instructor for Rescue dive also very good and more thorough than I first imagined (though I think I should have failed the final OR at least tried to do one more time for both rescues from bottom and surface!).

Booking the trip initially was very helpful and I went with big blue due to the feedback from - Wibeke I think it was, shame I didn't get to meet here however.

The dive gear shop as well was pretty good, and prices compare well to anywhere else. Maybe should promote that some more as only the one guy mentioned it to me or I wouldn't have known.

– I did hear that you guys team up with some of the Similan island dive co's - that to me is interesting in terms of being able to refer people and have some kind of a deal between the two. As my next trip I want is a liveaboard in Similan for the next season ,but again I have no idea where to start looking.

Any other comments :

1. Your new DMT's were sometimes quite annoying. Having even less dives than me and did a lot of less than desirable things on the boat and diving. getting in the way, bumping into you, swimming above you, kicking up the bottom, etc etc.

2. When we first arrived it was a bit of a factory process, wait here, sign this, sign that etc etc. After a half a days travel it's nice to think can just check in to hotel and relax a bit and then do all the diving guff. Then after that we had to carry all our gear from big blue 1 to 2 still exhausted and no idea where we were going... Then unfortunately the girl at the counter at BB2 was totally rude, unhelpful, dismissive and needed a good clip on the ears... anyway that was more about first impressions.

3. The First aid course was pretty lax, many things the instructor didn't clearly know or not mentioned at all. I already did the course 5 years ago so knew what to expect and really, if I had never done first aid before, then very little of that course would have helped.

4. I know early mornings are rough, but I love to get up and out first thing - I guess you have to accommodate for all though.

5. Oh yeah - it was songkran party so i know out of the usual, but it would be great to see an effort put in to raise some awareness about cleaning up the beach, as most mornings I'd walk the beach and find loads of rubbish floating off into the ocean... Not cool at all and keep our dive sites beautiful right.

Surely there's a bunch of other stuff i can comment on helpful or not, but that's the most that comes to mind.

hope something here is helpful. Cheers.

Over too fast :)

We came to big blue to get our diving certificate and ended up staying for our advanced. We enjoyed out stay and dives with Steve-O and would definitely come back again :) if I had to mention something it would be that out cleaning lady left our room door open three days in a row dispuite the staff telling her to keep in eye out for it not to happen again. And the extra charge when paying with credit card is ridiculous and should be mentioned to people so they can withdraw before. Besides that a great stay :)

Amazing diving experience

Big Blue is a great diving school just next to the beach. All the instructor are amazing. I met great people there and really enjoy my open course with Petra and Paul. Very kind, always there, I was feeling secure with them. Plus! You have the choice between Padi and SSI. Your instructor's gonna explain to you what the differences are.

Even if it's one of the biggest school on the island, you'll be 6 by instructor! So little groups for an amazing experience under the sea.

The only "bemol" is about the wifi never working and the basics accommodations. Like it's okay because you don't pay during your dive, but if you want to stay one more night after that the price is ridiculously high for what you get.

Open Water, Advanced Open Water, & Loveaboard

Did my Open Water at Koh Tao with Big Blue and loved it. It's was affordable while still getting really good gear, instructors, and boats. Everybody was really nice and my instructor, Nick, and the DMT, Simon, were great to learn from. Nobody in my group of 6 students was rushed into anything they felt uncomfortable with and Nick and Simon were always there, both during and after hours, to answer any questions and generally just be cool guys to hang out with.

I then did my Advanced Open Water on the Loveaboard out of Kao Lak with Big Blue and it was one of the best experiences of my life. The boat was amazing, with great food, very comfortable quarters, top notch gear, and an amazingly helpful and friendly crew. And not just that but I was taken to some of the best dive sites the world has to offer. My Dive Master, Julien, was great beyond words. He made sure we saw everything possible from groups of Manta Rays, turtles, and sharks to tiny pipefish and seahorse. He really seemed to have a knack for finding those hard to spot creatures that, I'm sure, many would glance over and not notice.

The only downside is that now I'm completely obsessed with diving. If you've done your research, I'm sure you'll have already have learnt that Big Blue are one of the big players in diving in Thailand and their reputation as one if the best operators is well deserved. All their staff I met were very welcoming and just nice people and they all were very environmentally conscious too which is nice.

There are many great dive operators out there but when I go back to Thailand I wouldn't dive with anybody else. Not that I'm so loyal to the company, more just that my instructors and dive masters were that cool.
