I had no intentions of scuba diving as I made my way to the island of Koh Toa with My partner whom was very keen on exploring the underwater world. However, after meeting with a reprensetive on the boat, and a couple of fellow travellers also heading to the island to scuba dive, my mind was miraculously changed! We arrived on the island and immediately checked in due to start our open water course the same day!
The next day we started our course in the pool with our instructor, Ant. Getting over my fear of breathing under water came apparent when I struggled to complete skills the rest of my team breezed through. I began to get worked up, frustated, upset and so angry with my self I was set to give the course up. Adamant I was never going to dive in the sea! Ant gave me a 5minute breather whilst he carried on with the rest of the team so not to slow them down as well. He then approached me with such a motivational, empowering speech that I ended up returning to the pool and to my team. If a stranger wasn't willing to give up on Me, then how could I give up on Myself. After finishing our day in the pool Ant invested a little extra time in me and we went through some skills again one on one ensuring I felt confident in them. I aced them all! I celebrated that night with a beer and an early night!
Day 3 of our course meant we was finally getting into the sea! After a team breakfast and brief we was knitted out ready to hit the open water. WOW!! What an experience, something I may never of experienced if My instructor had the same attitude I did. All my fears of the day before had evaporated as I frog kicked my self through the sea. I felt exhilarated as I went to bed that evening.
As we woke at 5am for the last day of diving I actually felt excited. One of the dive sites was a fun dive. That dive i became a confident mermaid 18metres below the surface!A phenomenal experience I will never ever forget!
I felt so emotional that evening as we dined one last time as a team, All different walks of life, different home countries and background stories. Not only had I qualified as a scuba diver, I had met some amazing people along the way.
Big Blue is a fantastic dive school. The accommodation was some of the best we had stayed in across Thailand, all staff were very helpful and friendly, the food never left us empty and it was amazing value for money!
I will be forever grateful to the rep for convincing me, my instructor for never giving up on me and the support from my fellow team mates.
