OUR ISLAND

Boracay Island: Description of Boracay

Boracay Island is a tiny patch of paradise about seven kilometers long and only one kilometer wide at its narrow midriff. It is surrounded by the finest white sand beaches you will ever see. The main beach, or White Beach as it is commonly known, is located on the western side of the island. It is about four kilometers long and it is where most establishments are located.

Boracay is located off the northwest corner of Panay—a large triangular island in the Philippines. It is part of the province of Aklan which is famous for its piña cloth and Ati-atihan Festival. Boracay’s largest villages or barangays are Manoc-manoc, Balabag and Yapak. The total land area is approximately 1,000 hectares.

Walking along the White Beach of Boracay is a treat for the senses. There's the spectacular aquamarine waters fringed by talc-like sand on one side, and then there's the parade of shops, restaurants and resorts on the other. Here you will find everything you need to make your stay on Boracay Island comfortable and memorable.

Shopping is a very popular activity in Boracay Island. Besides the usual souvenir t-shirts, one can also find handicrafts, paintings, jewelry, garments and even furniture! Bargaining is expected and makes up half the fun of shopping.

Since Boracay is a major destination of visitors from all over the world, it is not surprising that authentic international cuisine can be found everywhere. A gastronomic adventure awaits the hungry beachcomber, but whichever restaurant you end up in, don't forget to order a fresh fruit shake - definitely a part of the Boracay experience! Just ask for the fruit flavor currently in season.

For those who wish to really get away from it all, 15 minutes of brisk walking is all it takes to escape to the other, more peaceful but equally beautiful beaches of Boracay Island. Visit Puka Shell, Ilig-Iligan, Punta Bunga, Balinghai, Diniwid and Bulabog beaches to catch a glimpse of Boracay as it was just a few decades ago.

A myriad of activities is available for those who wish to do more than laze around in the sun. Bike excursions, sailboat tours, horseback riding, jet skiing and massages can be arranged. And of course, there’s scuba diving.

Diving in Boracay

Scuba Diving: Diving Conditions Around Boracay

The Philippines has only two seasons: Dry and wet. The dry season is from December to June. Surface temperatures average 25 degrees Celsius from December to February, and can go as high as 38 degrees from March until June.

The wet season is from July until November, with temperatures on the surface ranging from 28 to 30 degrees Celsius.

The year-round average water temperature of Boracay is about 28 degrees Celsius. The coldest it ever gets is 21 degrees Celsius at 30 meters depth in December to February. The warmest months are April and May when the water temperature can reach highs of 32 degrees Celsius.

Visibility at Boracay’s dive sites seems to be directly related to the water temperature. During the warm summer months (April to June), visibility can reach 30 to 50 meters, while in the colder season (December to February), it can be only 5 to 10 meters. A yearly plankton and algae bloom seems to be responsible for reduced visibility from December to February. Year-round average is 15 to 20 meters.

Currents along the “longer” parts of Boracay Island—east and west—are quite mild, which make the dive sites along these areas ideal for beginners or training. The currents at the northern channel between Boracay and Carabao Island, and the southern channel between Boracay and Panay Island can be fierce at times. For this reason, tide tables are consulted during dive planning.

The bottom composition of Boracay at any depth is fine white sand, which reflects sunlight and makes surroundings very bright during dives. Just watch your buoyancy to avoid “sandstorms” underwater!

There are two predominant winds: Habagat or southwest monsoon, and Amihan or northeast monsoon. We schedule dives on the west side of the island during Amihan season (December to February), and on the east side during Habagat (July to September). It is possible to dive here all year round, although a few dive sites may not be accessible during the monsoon season. Most of the year, though, surface conditions are generally calm.

In terms of marine life, the Philippines is considered a biodiversity hotspot. More species occur in this region than in any other part of the tropical reef world. Boracay has gained a solid reputation for macro photography because of the abundance of small critters such as pipefish, gobies, and nudibranchs, as well as the usual colorful reef fishes like damsels, angelfish, wrasses, squirrelfish and cardinals. Parrotfish, emperors, triggerfish and groupers generally reside in 15 to 20 meter deep water, while pelagics like sharks, tunas, trevallies and rays are commonly sighted in the deeper dive sites like Yapak and Camia. Coral growth is very healthy and spectacular in areas with steady current, such as Crocodile and Laurel.
Tourist Information

Climate

The Philippines has only two seasons: Dry and wet. The dry season is from December to June. Surface temperatures average 25 degrees Celsius from December to February, and can go as high as 38 degrees from March until June. This is also the peak tourist season, as most sunworshippers take advantage of the pleasant weather.

The wet season is from July until November, with temperatures on the surface ranging from 28 to 30 degrees Celsius.

An average of 20 typhoons or tropical storms sweep through the Philippines each year, usually in the wet season from July to November. Boracay very rarely experiences a direct hit, however. Most typhoons graze the eastern part of the Philippines and go north towards Taiwan.

The Philippines has very high humidity. This means that brief rainshowers can occur anytime, but since the weather doesn’t matter underwater, scuba diving is a popular year-round activity.

A special note about monsoons: From November to March, the northeast monsoon, or amihan, blows across Boracay, creating optimum conditions for windsurfing and kiteboarding along the eastern shore. Winds are usually strongest from late December to early February. During these months, diving is limited to the western side of Boracay.

The habagat, or southwest monsoon, affects Boracay from July to October, sometimes creating 2-meter waves on the western side of the island. Scuba diving is restricted to Boracay’s eastern part during this period.

Electricity

The electricity on Boracay Island is 220v AC, 60 cycles.

While the power company, AKELCO, is currently upgrading its services, power failures, locally called "brownouts", are still common, so in choosing a place to stay, be sure to ask if they can ensure 24-hour power.

Health

Bottled drinking water is available at all resorts, restaurants and grocery stores on Boracay Island. In some establishments, tap water is not potable. Be sure to ask before you drink. Drink lots of water to avoid dehydration.

Mosquitoes are not really a problem, but they do become aggressive around sunset time. We recommend that you use insect repellent when you go outdoors.

Metropolitan Doctors Medical Clinic and Island Clinic have doctors on call 24 hours a day. House calls can be arranged on request. Farmacia Gomez and Harlem Drugstore are two of the largest pharmacies on Boracay.

For scuba divers, hyperbaric physician Dr. Maria Cristina Teotico can be contacted at the Metropolitan Doctors Medical Clinic. The nearest recompression chamber is one hour away at Saint Patrick’s Hospital in Batangas City.

Money

The Philippine peso is divided into 100 centavos. Banknotes are available in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000. The most common coins are 25 centavos, one peso, five pesos and ten pesos.

The larger business establishments accept all major credit cards and traveler’s cheques, although some places may add a surcharge for credit card payments. Cash payments in Philippine peso, US dollars or Euro are commonly accepted.

Three banks-- Allied Bank, located on the main road between Boat Stations 2 and 3, and Bank of the Philippine Islands and Metro Bank, also on the main road near D’Mall-- offer full banking services including foreign currency exchange of bank notes and traveler's cheques. All have ATMs on-site.

Cirrus, Maestro, American Express and Mastercard cardholders can also withdraw cash at these ATMs, but due to high demand, funds may not be readily available.

Post and Communications

There is a small post office at Balabag Plaza, open on weekdays only. The Boracay Tourist Center also has a faster but costlier postal service. Parcels may be sent via LBC or JRS Express.

There are many internet cafes on Boracay. Most offer broadband connections. Inso Internet Café and Tourist Center Intenet are just two of the larger ones. New Wave Divers provides free Wi-fi access to our customers. There are also many Wi-fi hotspots around Boracay.

Awesome and professional dive shop!

I've had the good fortune to dive with BINW several times, and I've been very happy each time. The owner Lynette made scheduling my dives easy--she a US citizen and catches emails at all hours, responds quickly, and is very customer-focused. She set up everything from my pickup from the airport to my lodging on the island, sparing me lots of stress about what I needed to make happen. She and the team and the dive shop are great, genuinely nice people. They were professional and concerned about safety at all times. The shop also uses new gear and is the only shop on the island to use air filters when filling tanks--no lung rot! The dives were fun and the whole experience a pleasure. I'm definitely going back to dive with them again. :-)

Great diving experience

I had a great time doing my first discovery dive with Instructor Kay. She was great and very clear at explaining things and was very patient with me during training, despite my difficulty at first to do the four steps required before going to dive out at sea. She also knew how to work my fears and once she got me to a state where I could trust the equipment and her to guide me, it was a breeze when we finally went to dive at Coral Gardens and Balinghai. I had a negative experience years ago when I did my intro dive, so I never really pursued it after. But having done this now with proper instruction, I'm giving diving a second look ;-)

The people at New Wave Divers, including the administrators and other instructors, were also very nice and friendly. The office is small, compared to some other dive shops in Boracay, but it's a cozy one. They've also done some renovations and the place is quite organized. The boats they had were also well maintained and the boat men were friendly and helpful.

Professional, Friendly, Fun & Safe

Wilson Lee (trainer) was very patient and professional. He made sure you were comfortable with the skills so that you can enjoy your dive. We were all beginners. There's a lot more technicality in diving that one may think, but the team was very helpful and encouraging, together with the local staff on the boat. I was nervous but they encouraged me. Great experience!!

Awesome Diving Experience with BINWD Family in Boracay!

I had a great time diving with BORACAY ISLAND NEW WAVE DIVERS (BINWD) during my 22-29 Nov stay. The staff & crew were all very hospitable and I was warmly welcomed as family member. Thanks very much Ruth, Sheila, Wilson, Ann, Matt, Kaye, Craig, Tracey for all the good times and taking care of my dive trips. Special thanks to Al-Razel for taking care of my daughter's DSD experience.

On my first night, I joined Ruth's birthday bash dinner and felt like my welcome party :-)

During my dive trips, we went 40-meter deep dive twice to YAPAK-2 site to see some sharks and we were successful in our 2nd dive. Here's my new quote "Once you go YAPAK, you'll always go back".

I also went twice to CAMIA Ship Wreck to capture video of the sea creatures living inside & outside the wreck.

I will definitely come back to BINWD in my future Boracay trips and my new place to hangout ;-)

Amazing experience with New Wave Divers

I love, love, love these guys.

I'm a first-time diver, and was there to do a Discover Scuba Diving experience, along with another friend. My other (3rd) friend is a certified diver and was there to do a few fun dives with them.

So firstly, let's just talk about the DSD experience. We had Mick Chapman as our instructor (or whatever it is they're called in official PADI terms), and he was wonderful. Very cheerful, friendly and patient. I had a short freak-out in the swimming pool while he was teaching us the basics, while my friend had a complete panic attack, but Mick was absolutely accommodating, even when my friend decided to pull out from the DSD. As he kept emphasizing, it's safety first for us.

When we finally went out to sea for the dive, Mick remained patient with me, even while I took a longer time than usual, to equalize the pressure. When I finally did make it down, the marine life was just so lovely. I guess I was still a little nervous and very focused on my breathing and equalizing, but Mick made the effort to point out little things to me, and it enhanced my first-time diving experience for sure.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience, and I'm really thankful to everyone at New Wave, especially Mick of course, for being such a great and patient teacher. So thank you, Mick, Matt, Klinton, as well as Matt's two daughters who dived with us, Tia (not sure if I got the spelling right) and Emma. We felt your warmth and hospitality, even through your professionalism!

I don't actually intend to get any certification, but should I ever wish to do another dive in Boracay, I'm definitely coming back to these guys!

a wonderful experience

I've always wanted to venture into scuba diving ao what better place than Boracay. After the reviews on Trip Advisor I decided to get in contact.

Lynette was more than helpful in providing me with information as well as things i could look forward to. There were no hidden fees and all you need to do is turn up

Our instructor was Wilson. He was so friendly and was very encouraging. He is a very skilled diver and I knew that i could trust him. He wasn't pushy and was very patient which I liked as that made me more confident in going diving.

I recommend Boracay Island New Wave as they made my experience fund. I would come back to do my OWD if the chance came around to it

Overrated by a mile

Boracay Diving? What a misnomer. 1st dive to a "well preserved wreck" turned out to be a barge. 2nd dive to a "notable wall dive". Well, you had better go somewhere and see what a wall dive means.....it usually involves a wall.
Hire gear. Claimed by email from the owner to be 1st class. Well, the fin strap was noted in the shop to be broken. Offered the same broken fin on the next dive too. Nobody watching here. 1st stage free flowed on 1st dive so it was switched to a spare. That was hardly able to deliver air. Just as well the 1st dive was fairly shallow as it felt like the tank was empty for the whole dive. If this is the best Boracay has to offer then give it a miss and go somewhere like Thailand where the diving is a lot better.

wow ..we can not help your disappointment with the diving boat or the wall not being up to your standards. This is not a problem with most anyone who dives with us and maybe your diving adventures have taken you to higher adventures? I know I have been diving with great whites and that is not to be compared with Boracay. But you should take what you have a appreciate it for what it is and not expect something different. Everything we have to offer is online and well described and even hundreds of pictures of it. Yes we have new equipment and it is rental gear if you expect perfect gear you should buy your own. Sorry I am not meaning to sound harsh but your review is pretty unfair in what your saying. I am very sorry you feel this way.

Genial , Great

I was searching in the web where to learn to dive in Philippines, when the web page of BINWD appears was the only place among others that they make me feel important, Lynette answered all my questions almost inmediately, when i arrived to the store in Boracay i really tougth that it was small, and i was doubting about their expertise, but once we started all those doubts disappeared, i can noticed their professionalism, the attention from the whole crew was excellent they really make u feel that u are among friends and actually at the end of the day is really like that, my instructor Matt is a great man so funny to learn to dive with him, he answered all my questions and explained to me the times that was necessary because sometimes i didn't understand because im not a native english speaker and my english is really bad but that didnt seem an obstacle to learn, all personal are welcoming persons, Ruth, Sheila, the instructors Kay, Wilson and Matt.

Thanks BINWD

Great experience

Good service with experienced tutor. Pushed us to learn the necessity basics and reached the depth of 18 meters at the open water courses, which made us not afraid of any dive later at recreational depth.

Friendly staff. easy diving, amazing night dive!

New wave divers owner Lynette arranged everything with us before hand and the service and help we got from her was excellent. She rented out her room upstairs of the dive shop for us but unfortunately the noise from the neighbour beach bar was too much to handle and we moved to a quieter location for the next night. The staff was very helpful in finding us a room for the rest of our stay. Our dive gear was also lost by the airline but that was no issue to rent the needed gear for the first two days until our own stuff arrived. Our dive guide was Matt and we had very relaxing time on the dives. The briefs were good and it was just mainly the three of us. The dive sites are comfortably close to the beach. The best experience for us was the amazing night dive; just average 2m deep from the beach on the sandy bottom you can see the most peculiar creatures; all the strange crustaceans crawl out for the night. We had a 90 minutes dive and could have still stayed finding all the time species we had never seen before.

Had a great safe dive experience with New Wave Divers

I wouldn't hesitate recommending New Wave divers to any of my friends. The atmosphere was informal and relaxed ( as we like it) when we enquired but also very focused on assuring us of the high safety standards. We were a family of 4 who hadn't dived for a while and had 2 dive masters with us. Matt made us feel totally comfortable immediately .
