OUR ISLAND

Boracay Island: Description of Boracay

Boracay Island is a tiny patch of paradise about seven kilometers long and only one kilometer wide at its narrow midriff. It is surrounded by the finest white sand beaches you will ever see. The main beach, or White Beach as it is commonly known, is located on the western side of the island. It is about four kilometers long and it is where most establishments are located.

Boracay is located off the northwest corner of Panay—a large triangular island in the Philippines. It is part of the province of Aklan which is famous for its piña cloth and Ati-atihan Festival. Boracay’s largest villages or barangays are Manoc-manoc, Balabag and Yapak. The total land area is approximately 1,000 hectares.

Walking along the White Beach of Boracay is a treat for the senses. There's the spectacular aquamarine waters fringed by talc-like sand on one side, and then there's the parade of shops, restaurants and resorts on the other. Here you will find everything you need to make your stay on Boracay Island comfortable and memorable.

Shopping is a very popular activity in Boracay Island. Besides the usual souvenir t-shirts, one can also find handicrafts, paintings, jewelry, garments and even furniture! Bargaining is expected and makes up half the fun of shopping.

Since Boracay is a major destination of visitors from all over the world, it is not surprising that authentic international cuisine can be found everywhere. A gastronomic adventure awaits the hungry beachcomber, but whichever restaurant you end up in, don't forget to order a fresh fruit shake - definitely a part of the Boracay experience! Just ask for the fruit flavor currently in season.

For those who wish to really get away from it all, 15 minutes of brisk walking is all it takes to escape to the other, more peaceful but equally beautiful beaches of Boracay Island. Visit Puka Shell, Ilig-Iligan, Punta Bunga, Balinghai, Diniwid and Bulabog beaches to catch a glimpse of Boracay as it was just a few decades ago.

A myriad of activities is available for those who wish to do more than laze around in the sun. Bike excursions, sailboat tours, horseback riding, jet skiing and massages can be arranged. And of course, there’s scuba diving.

Diving in Boracay

Scuba Diving: Diving Conditions Around Boracay

The Philippines has only two seasons: Dry and wet. The dry season is from December to June. Surface temperatures average 25 degrees Celsius from December to February, and can go as high as 38 degrees from March until June.

The wet season is from July until November, with temperatures on the surface ranging from 28 to 30 degrees Celsius.

The year-round average water temperature of Boracay is about 28 degrees Celsius. The coldest it ever gets is 21 degrees Celsius at 30 meters depth in December to February. The warmest months are April and May when the water temperature can reach highs of 32 degrees Celsius.

Visibility at Boracay’s dive sites seems to be directly related to the water temperature. During the warm summer months (April to June), visibility can reach 30 to 50 meters, while in the colder season (December to February), it can be only 5 to 10 meters. A yearly plankton and algae bloom seems to be responsible for reduced visibility from December to February. Year-round average is 15 to 20 meters.

Currents along the “longer” parts of Boracay Island—east and west—are quite mild, which make the dive sites along these areas ideal for beginners or training. The currents at the northern channel between Boracay and Carabao Island, and the southern channel between Boracay and Panay Island can be fierce at times. For this reason, tide tables are consulted during dive planning.

The bottom composition of Boracay at any depth is fine white sand, which reflects sunlight and makes surroundings very bright during dives. Just watch your buoyancy to avoid “sandstorms” underwater!

There are two predominant winds: Habagat or southwest monsoon, and Amihan or northeast monsoon. We schedule dives on the west side of the island during Amihan season (December to February), and on the east side during Habagat (July to September). It is possible to dive here all year round, although a few dive sites may not be accessible during the monsoon season. Most of the year, though, surface conditions are generally calm.

In terms of marine life, the Philippines is considered a biodiversity hotspot. More species occur in this region than in any other part of the tropical reef world. Boracay has gained a solid reputation for macro photography because of the abundance of small critters such as pipefish, gobies, and nudibranchs, as well as the usual colorful reef fishes like damsels, angelfish, wrasses, squirrelfish and cardinals. Parrotfish, emperors, triggerfish and groupers generally reside in 15 to 20 meter deep water, while pelagics like sharks, tunas, trevallies and rays are commonly sighted in the deeper dive sites like Yapak and Camia. Coral growth is very healthy and spectacular in areas with steady current, such as Crocodile and Laurel.
Tourist Information

Climate

The Philippines has only two seasons: Dry and wet. The dry season is from December to June. Surface temperatures average 25 degrees Celsius from December to February, and can go as high as 38 degrees from March until June. This is also the peak tourist season, as most sunworshippers take advantage of the pleasant weather.

The wet season is from July until November, with temperatures on the surface ranging from 28 to 30 degrees Celsius.

An average of 20 typhoons or tropical storms sweep through the Philippines each year, usually in the wet season from July to November. Boracay very rarely experiences a direct hit, however. Most typhoons graze the eastern part of the Philippines and go north towards Taiwan.

The Philippines has very high humidity. This means that brief rainshowers can occur anytime, but since the weather doesn’t matter underwater, scuba diving is a popular year-round activity.

A special note about monsoons: From November to March, the northeast monsoon, or amihan, blows across Boracay, creating optimum conditions for windsurfing and kiteboarding along the eastern shore. Winds are usually strongest from late December to early February. During these months, diving is limited to the western side of Boracay.

The habagat, or southwest monsoon, affects Boracay from July to October, sometimes creating 2-meter waves on the western side of the island. Scuba diving is restricted to Boracay’s eastern part during this period.

Electricity

The electricity on Boracay Island is 220v AC, 60 cycles.

While the power company, AKELCO, is currently upgrading its services, power failures, locally called "brownouts", are still common, so in choosing a place to stay, be sure to ask if they can ensure 24-hour power.

Health

Bottled drinking water is available at all resorts, restaurants and grocery stores on Boracay Island. In some establishments, tap water is not potable. Be sure to ask before you drink. Drink lots of water to avoid dehydration.

Mosquitoes are not really a problem, but they do become aggressive around sunset time. We recommend that you use insect repellent when you go outdoors.

Metropolitan Doctors Medical Clinic and Island Clinic have doctors on call 24 hours a day. House calls can be arranged on request. Farmacia Gomez and Harlem Drugstore are two of the largest pharmacies on Boracay.

For scuba divers, hyperbaric physician Dr. Maria Cristina Teotico can be contacted at the Metropolitan Doctors Medical Clinic. The nearest recompression chamber is one hour away at Saint Patrick’s Hospital in Batangas City.

Money

The Philippine peso is divided into 100 centavos. Banknotes are available in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000. The most common coins are 25 centavos, one peso, five pesos and ten pesos.

The larger business establishments accept all major credit cards and traveler’s cheques, although some places may add a surcharge for credit card payments. Cash payments in Philippine peso, US dollars or Euro are commonly accepted.

Three banks-- Allied Bank, located on the main road between Boat Stations 2 and 3, and Bank of the Philippine Islands and Metro Bank, also on the main road near D’Mall-- offer full banking services including foreign currency exchange of bank notes and traveler's cheques. All have ATMs on-site.

Cirrus, Maestro, American Express and Mastercard cardholders can also withdraw cash at these ATMs, but due to high demand, funds may not be readily available.

Post and Communications

There is a small post office at Balabag Plaza, open on weekdays only. The Boracay Tourist Center also has a faster but costlier postal service. Parcels may be sent via LBC or JRS Express.

There are many internet cafes on Boracay. Most offer broadband connections. Inso Internet Café and Tourist Center Intenet are just two of the larger ones. New Wave Divers provides free Wi-fi access to our customers. There are also many Wi-fi hotspots around Boracay.

Had a great time and I would recommend this dive shop to my friends!

Excellent pre-trip support from Lynette with recommendations on lodging and she even assisted my wife and me in booking the transfer to and fro the airport!

Small dive groups with no more then 3 person + 1 dive instructor but most dives were done with just the dive instructor and me.

Intended to do 6 dives in 2 days but ended up doing 7 dives in 3 days. It is possible to do 4 dives a day due to the shallow waters of some dive sites and close proximity of the dive sites. Dive sites range from 10 - 30 mins boat ride away from the dive shop.

Highly recommend Tri bird (plane wreck), Crocodile Island (amazing soft corals) and Friday's Rock (critters) for the dive sites.

Found some great critters on the second day, very pleased with my dive instructor, Kevin. Just chatted the time away between the dives.

If you were expecting butler service where your gear is all brought to the boat and setup for you, you will be disappointed. It's more like diving with friends who will help you, if you need help.

You will have to suit up, bring your gear and walk about 5 mins along the beach to the boat. Bring your own water bottle if you want a drink in between dives, as this is not provided on the boat.

All in all, had a great time and I would recommend this dive shop to my friends!

Friendly staff. easy diving, amazing night dive!

New wave divers owner Lynette arranged everything with us before hand and the service and help we got from her was excellent. She rented out her room upstairs of the dive shop for us but unfortunately the noise from the neighbour beach bar was too much to handle and we moved to a quieter location for the next night. The staff was very helpful in finding us a room for the rest of our stay. Our dive gear was also lost by the airline but that was no issue to rent the needed gear for the first two days until our own stuff arrived. Our dive guide was Matt and we had very relaxing time on the dives. The briefs were good and it was just mainly the three of us. The dive sites are comfortably close to the beach. The best experience for us was the amazing night dive; just average 2m deep from the beach on the sandy bottom you can see the most peculiar creatures; all the strange crustaceans crawl out for the night. We had a 90 minutes dive and could have still stayed finding all the time species we had never seen before.

Great coach and very friendly team

Went to Boracay on last minute and New Divers was extremely responsive and flexible regarding my demand.
Upon arrival I was greeted in a very friendly and efficient way and started my course straight on.
My instructor, Guillaume has a wealth of knowledge even being young of age and is truly dedicated to teach till the smallest details of the course.
My time was limited but we achieved to do all of it in 4 days.

Unforgettable - for the rest of my life

I never thought my experience at BINWD would be this memorable. The girls debbie and Sheila and the boat men are very friendly... above all else, my instructor David de Gorter, is just beyond amazing! He made learning fun and easy. I will never ever forget him. I am sure that I will be coming back, as diving with him has been really exciting! I will always recommend the shop and David to my friends. Thank you very much guys!

A great experience and a well organised team at New Wave Divers

My son and I did our Advanced Open Water course with New Wave Divers on Boracay Island and it was as great experience. We both felt that the team looked after us well and David, our instructor, was very professional and knowledgeable. Apart from getting our qualification we had some amazing dives which were varied and the different locations meant we saw lots of interesting sea life too. I would definitely recommend New Wave Divers to anyone visiting Boracay, who wants a good diving experience with a friendly team of professionals.

Overrated by a mile

Boracay Diving? What a misnomer. 1st dive to a "well preserved wreck" turned out to be a barge. 2nd dive to a "notable wall dive". Well, you had better go somewhere and see what a wall dive means.....it usually involves a wall.
Hire gear. Claimed by email from the owner to be 1st class. Well, the fin strap was noted in the shop to be broken. Offered the same broken fin on the next dive too. Nobody watching here. 1st stage free flowed on 1st dive so it was switched to a spare. That was hardly able to deliver air. Just as well the 1st dive was fairly shallow as it felt like the tank was empty for the whole dive. If this is the best Boracay has to offer then give it a miss and go somewhere like Thailand where the diving is a lot better.

wow ..we can not help your disappointment with the diving boat or the wall not being up to your standards. This is not a problem with most anyone who dives with us and maybe your diving adventures have taken you to higher adventures? I know I have been diving with great whites and that is not to be compared with Boracay. But you should take what you have a appreciate it for what it is and not expect something different. Everything we have to offer is online and well described and even hundreds of pictures of it. Yes we have new equipment and it is rental gear if you expect perfect gear you should buy your own. Sorry I am not meaning to sound harsh but your review is pretty unfair in what your saying. I am very sorry you feel this way.

Three awesome dives with lovely instructor

I was only going to be on Boracay Island for 5 days, but in those 5 days I really wanted to dive. One guy from my hostel overheard me talking about diving and he brought me to Boracay Island New Wave Divers. The owner of the dive school is Dutch as am I, so this was a plus. I made 3 amazing dives and I would definitely go here again or recommend it to a friend.

I did the open water diving course and was very satisfied with the service I was provided. The dive master went to pick my buddy and I up at my hotel every morning and brought us back after every last dives we did in a day. It was a very enjoyable experience as the dive master was also very funny and easygoing. I had absolutely no worries even though it's my first time diving. Thank you.

Awesome Diving Experience with BINWD Family in Boracay!

I had a great time diving with BORACAY ISLAND NEW WAVE DIVERS (BINWD) during my 22-29 Nov stay. The staff & crew were all very hospitable and I was warmly welcomed as family member. Thanks very much Ruth, Sheila, Wilson, Ann, Matt, Kaye, Craig, Tracey for all the good times and taking care of my dive trips. Special thanks to Al-Razel for taking care of my daughter's DSD experience.

On my first night, I joined Ruth's birthday bash dinner and felt like my welcome party :-)

During my dive trips, we went 40-meter deep dive twice to YAPAK-2 site to see some sharks and we were successful in our 2nd dive. Here's my new quote "Once you go YAPAK, you'll always go back".

I also went twice to CAMIA Ship Wreck to capture video of the sea creatures living inside & outside the wreck.

I will definitely come back to BINWD in my future Boracay trips and my new place to hangout ;-)

New Wave is awesome

The staff at New Wave is extremely friendly and easy going. They took time to answer all my questions. Since I have high blood pressure and diabetes, I contacted New Wave about my medical conditions. Lynette sent me informative links and urged me to consult my physician before diving. This was my first time scuba diving. My dive instructor David De Gorter was extremely patient and is a great instructor. Now that I am Open Water certified, I look forward to advancing my understanding and experience in scuba diving.

Great Staff, Very Personalised Service, Easy Pace

This dive operator offers a very personalised service in that they will accommodate requests as far as possible.

Divers have the choice of doing as many as four dives a day and a night dive too if they are sufficiently energetic with a choice of dive spots that take some beating.

Boracay waters are for the large part, exceptionally clear and warm, making for comfortable, relaxed diving with plenty to see and the experienced and easy going dive guides maximise the potential of any site visited.

The acceptance of credit cards also relieves tourists of the hassle of carrying wads of cash.

Overall, highly recommended.

Diving heaven. These guys will really make you feel comfortable underwater even if you otherwise don't. I'm going diving again and scared that David , my instructor won't be there! Patient , attentive and kind he is the best person I have ever been diving with! Plus all the guys in the shop are really cool! They make your holiday. Even though we had an amazing room, we felt like the dive shop was our home and wanted to chill there instead. I will never ever forget the dives with them and beers after! Most professional coolest shop ever! Lynette also lent me her suit because it gave me a better fit and David his personal mask! He will always be attentive to you underwater and the way he teaches is clear. No one will ever force you to do anything your not comfortable with and will show you cool things underwater. There is no better place than this!

Nice and easy relaxed atmosphere while staying safe and within regulations.

Would definitely recommend

It's the instructors that made the dives awesome

All dives are amazing, but diving with awesome instructors make the dive even more magnificent! This is my exact experience with New Wave Divers! My AOW instructor Michael was knowledgable and experienced, constantly ensuring my safety before all dives. Moreover, his good sense of humour never cease to put a smile on my face. Did I mentioned his infectious passion for diving? That's what made all my dives totally awesome!

As for my cousin's OW instructor, Matt, he is extremely caring and always ensuring the safety of my cousin who was facing some difficulty in equalizing. With his tender loving care and careful guidance, my cousin has successfully passed his OWC!

Instructors aside, Lynette (owner) and Emily (coordinator) are wonder women who somehow can accommodate my super last minute requests and my entire trip was smooth sailing! Without their efficiency, my trip would no doubt be a disaster.

So thanks you so much ladies and gentlemen! You guys made my diving at Boracay memorable!

Highly recommend to everyone else to dive with New Wave Divers!

Efficient management, friendly staffs but not a great dive

Confirmed my dive very last minute, but management was fast to respond and quick to act upon my request. Kudos to that! However that dive was definitely not a pleasure one due to weather condition and strong current. The initial plan was to head to Friday's Rock but apparently we did not get there, so we didn't dive like how we were briefed. Perhaps when the current is strong as such, instructor can always suggest to head to somewhere else instead. Unlike my other dive experience, he did not dive in first to check the water current. We were actually diving sideways...LOL! Overall it's still okay but hopefully by the next trip I'm back, the weather is gonna be kind to me. :)

Great instructors and friends

They were really helpful and patient and willing to answer questions that I had, I had Gil as my instructor we got along really well and I'm now going for my Advanced open water with them

FANTASTIC

The dive we had with New Wave Divers was great! Our dive master David was super nice! This was my third time and my boyfriends second time, but David was fair enough to let us off the leash since he saw that we had things under control :) Don't misunderstand, he frequently checked on us. This was not like a lot of other dive centers in Boracay, where you take a couple of pictures, and you're done in 20-30 minutes. We're going back in January, and hopefully we'll get to do the open water course with NWD :)
