Didn't meet expectations

All in all, it was a fun day of scuba. I have only been once before in Maui, so my expectations were pretty high. All instructors were nice and helpful. Gear was perfect. My main reason for a 3 star review is the fact that we only dove for 20 minutes, however the trip took up our entire day. That would have been fine, we would have planned accordingly, but this was never told to us. We went at 9AM to sign up, had to wait, were given an hour lesson, had to wait, walked to the dock, had to wait, and so on. I have heard of other company's with better experience. Wasn't a bad day, but certainly could have been better organized.

Good Diveshop, Average Diving sites (bad visibility)

Pros: If you're going to do your open water diving in Koh Tao, I do recommend them. Professional, friendly, they gave my boyfriend 1-to-1 instruction on his Open Water certificate. They also gave us a discount accommodation (at Silver Sands resort Bungalow next to Sairee beach). They have a small pool, where a lot of people do their open water. The restaurant served pretty good food. It was cheap (not really spicy).

Cons: The diving in Koh Tao Sucks. Visibility is low, not colorful. The tiny boat that we were packed into was almost sinking because there were too many people on it. There's nothing really bad about the dive shop itself except for overcrowding, but if you are going to do your Open Water, there's better (and cheaper) options than Koh Tao, such as Semporna in Malaysia, Sabang, Phillippines, Kota Kinabalu Malaysia (also bad visibility but a little bit cheaper), and Koh Lanta in Thailand (more expensive but the visibility is phenomenal)

Thanks for your review. Unfortunately it sounds as though the visibility wasn't great whilst you were here, it does vary during the year and in general the diving conditions aren't as good around when the Full Moon Parties are on. I was surprised to hear that any of those places offered the Open Water course cheaper than here on Koh Tao, but when checking it I did find a place in Sipidan that was indeed cheaper than here, however it did have a note at the bottom of the Open Water course that said the following -
DIVING IN SIPADAN ISLAND:
As announced by the Malaysian Government effective 10th Feb 2013 the following rules apply when diving Sipadan Island:
only Advanced Open Water Divers or entry level divers with a minimum of 20 log dives are allowed to dive in Sipadan.
Underwater Cameras, Hand Gloves and Fish Pointers are totally banned in Sipadan.

Which did make me wonder how it was that people were supposed to take the Open Water course unless they'd previously logged 20 DSD dives. The other places were all more expensive than here on Koh Tao though.

The best way to avoid the busy times here on Koh Tao is to not come here immediately before or after a Full Moon Party over on Koh Phangan.

Organizing was bad and timing horrible

I was told to come 10am for scuba review, but at 10am I was told to come back at 11am. After the review test I had to wait for almost an hour at the cafe. After waiting at the cafe we went to the beach - and got some more waiting. Waiting time was way too long and the snacks on the boat was poorly too. Dive master was great!

Ups and downs

Overall it was a good experience to get my padi certification with Davy Jones. The instructors do this all the time and they are very effective. It only takes three days and it is all very easy and simple. And cheap.

However I am disappointed with the diving. Poor visibility and not a lot to see. Quite boring compared to snorkeling in fx. Egypt/Australia. My instructors had never dived any where else.. The kept saying everything was fantastic and that the visibility was good. Hmm.

Also I did not like the fact that the instructors got three young girls drunk, bought them laughing gas and tried to hook up with them.. Seemed unprofessional to me. The girls did not like it either. But that is probably what most diving instructors do :)

Hi Catherine, it appears that your email address had been entered incorrectly and so that was why you hadn't received the code for your eManual, you would have also never received the notification from PADI that your certification had been processed. This has now been corrected in the PADI database and the link and your eManual code has been resent to your correct email address now :)
