First of all I found myself at a turning point in my life when I started my trip to the Thai Gulf , Koh Tao to be more precise. Not knowing what to really expect, but as I cary diving deep in my heart, I was hoping for the best. As soon as I arrived here I found myself surrounded by my new instructors showing me around. This really helped me to find my way on the island and made me feel comfortable and 'at home'. As it would be my new home for the next 8 weeks.
As I am writing this message I am packing my bags to return home to Belgium. But with an experience that changed me for ever and hopefully will continious to change my future. I recently succeeded the Instructor Examination at the end of my IDC. A very warm thank you goes to our Course Director Marie-Lise Roux and the 2 staff instructor canidates, Clémentine Dréan and Cary Moore, who were always there to support me and my fellow student. They showed us the values of team work in the dive industrie and gave us the opportunity to be all we can be, PADI's new instructors.
The island itself is a nice place. I like the environment, however it could be so much more than it already is. Pollution is the saddest thing I have seen on the island by far, aswell as the local attitude towards plastic bags. Bags, bottles, and loads of other rubbish end up at the side of the road and finally is the ocean. We, being tourists, divers, instructors and backpackers, can make a difference in this by just not using plastic bags any more and disposing our waste properly (recycling as much as possible).
About the dive sites I can say they are nice, not among the best in the world. But as most people seem to come here to learn how to dive or to make a carreer in teaching people to dive, the sites are more than OK. Plenty of variety in marine life to get you interested in seeing more and learning more and better diving.
I will be going home soon, but I look forward to come back here again soon. I will continious my path as an instructor right here. As for now it feels like the perfect place with the perfect people surrounding me. Friends who will give me the opportunity to become all I can be in the diving community. Inspiring others to participate in our beloved hobby. Hoping to raise awareness for our oceans
