An exceptionally high quality programme for the aspiring underwater photographer

I completed the "PADI Dive Centre Pro Photographer Diver" certification under Alex Tyrrell at Koh Tao Thailand during September 2018. For me, the certification was largely irrelevant - I was looking for a true underwater photography Pro to teach me the theoretical basis for proper underwater photography in a practical setting. Alex gave me that and so much more. His knowledge of theoretical photography, underwater gear, various photographic techniques, and composition is truly encyclopaedic. He was a great teacher and imparted his knowledge freely and without hesitation. From a practical perspective, he led us on many dives to explore unique settings particularly attractive for various subjects we were photographing - many of these critters and animals I am sure are rarely seen by most divers. That in itself was worth a lot.

I started the programme being a complete underwater photography novice. I have gained enough experience during this three-week programme to confidently take my underwater photography much further than I could have hoped for in such a short space of time.

If taking beautiful, well-lit and properly composed underwater photos is something you have always aspired to - then I can wholeheartedly and without reservation recommend Alex and this programme.

Great learning with Alex

The quality of my underwater pictures has improved greatly thanks to the PADI proffesional photography course delivered by Alex.

Alex is very knowledgeable, professional and has an effective teaching methodology.

I enjoyed every minute of the course; preparation, execution and edition!

Very recommended if you have a special love for underwater beauty and creatures!

3 Week photography workshop.

I heard about Alex and Dive4Photos several times during my Divemeaster internship and IDC course on Koh Tao.
Alex was a great teacher he has the passion for photography and his years of experience are were noticeable in every subject we touched above and under the water.

Personally I enjoyed the macro week most out of the entire workshop I would not skip out on the other 2 but I would definitely do some extra macro shoots in the future with Alex next time I am on Koh Tao.

Very comprehensive

I turned up for the course with zero knowledge of photography and was pleased surprised at how comprehensive the course was. We covered all the lenses I had, filters and strobes.
I also learned what I needed of Lightroom and Alex even advised and assisted me on buying more kit.
He was patient and also taught me more about marine life behaviour which I wasn't expecting.

A fun, detailed and immersive learning experience!

I recently took a four day photography course with Dive4Photos on Ko Tao. Alex's depth of knowledge, both in the technical and the artistic aspects of underwater photography is superb. His detailed and patient instruction taught me valuable techniques and helped develop skills that have taken my photography to new levels. I can highly recommend his courses to both beginners and those looking to improve on existing skills.

A great experience

I have been photographing underwater for over 10 years and contacted Dive4photo while being at Koh Tao after having read about them in a local leaflet. I managed to get a day with Alex, one to one and it was worth every penny.

We started of spending a couple of hours discussing my ambitions, experience and my camera setup, and possible adaptations to the setup based on my priorities. Alex was really tentative and adapted the discussions to my personal needs and experience. We then went on discussing different techniques and considerations to be made to get the best out of a dive and Alex shared both photo techniques but also tips on what subjects to choose and what to consider while approaching them and most importantly when to fire of to get the most out of the subject.

We finished of with 2 amazing dives giving me a whole bunch of really great pictures and gained experiences.

An excellent course, written and taught by a Pro.

Alex teaches the PADI dive centre pro photographer course with passion, patience and expertise.
He was an excellent mentor and teacher concerning everything from techniques at all levels, to identifying the right subject and how best to approach to achieve the shot you want. Worth a special mention is his vast knowledge of marine life and behaviours, something which I find fascinating. The BBC came to film underwater while I was on my course; Alex was their go-to guy. 'Nuff said.

Not a better place exists for underwater photography instruction

I came to Koh Tao with extensive land photography experience and and wanted to fulfill my dream of learning underwater photography. I contacted Alex and expressed what I wanted to learn and he went above and beyond what was expected. I previously interviewed every other "photography school" on the island and knew from the first meeting that this was by far the best option. Alex answered every question I had and I felt that he truly wanted me to gain the most form my course. I am a grateful for his help and know without a doubt that I made the right decision. Don't look any further Alex WILL make you a competent UW photographer and really cares about your development.

Better than you can hope for!

For the duration of the course, the diving experience was so relaxed & comfortable.. we were on the best (&biggest!) boat on KohTao, so no dragging of gear&tanks back&forth (yayyy!) The dives were fantastic, helping me to get a greater eye for detail, better diving techniques & soaking up all of Alexs incredible knowledge of the local ecology. Which led to longer dives&better photos! My favourite aspect of the course was Alex was really good at explaining the generic photography in such layman terms (theres only so much you can learn from books!) &Then having the opportunity & gratitude of trying&succeeding these new photography lessons.. UNDERWATER! :D Truly a fantastic course & an incredible teacher!!

Awesome Diving in Koh Tao

I was in Thailand for a recent vacation and wanted to get some diving in. I was referred to Alex by a buddy of mine and couldn't have been happier with my choice.

Alex handled all of the logistics, all I had to do was show up ready for an adventure!

The boat was great, spacious and clean (had a bathroom and dry room for relaxing) as well as served food (big plus!!). We were able to get 4 dives in and by the end of the day I was beat.

If you are looking for a guide, I'd highly recommend you go with Alex. His pricing was reasonable and he's friendly/knowledgeable.

Thanks, Alex!

Profesional, patient and loads of fun

I took a few courses with Alex and Dive4Photos as I had just bought a brand new G16 with all the works and knew nothing about it. Alex was a very patient and calm teacher, very clear in his explanations and if you didn't get it the first time he had no problem explaining it again. During dives he was very good at finding subjects and let you spend as long as you wanted on each, but at the same time aware of and careful of the sea creatures. What I really enjoyed was that he would not move a subject to make you happy, you would have to work around the subject as best you could. No interference in to the marine life :-) I also took a fluo course with Alex and it was an amazing experience, not to mention getting to the editing part in Lightroom after each dive. Here as well Alex was a very patient and good teacher, going through every step of editing, giving hints and tips and making sure you saw the difference when or if you had gone too far with it. Though in fluo photography there was not a lot of limits, and I could be a lot more artistic here :-) I highly recommend this company to everyone from novices to professionals :-)

Great knowledge and going the extra mile!

I took the Padi Dive Center Pro Photographer course with Alex Tyrrell. As I have done already some underwater photography for customers, I wanted to get more indepth knowledge in photography for myself. The course is very well structured, so that it gave me the time to practice and improve what I've learned in the classroom sessions.

Analyzing the pictures and learning how to use the Lightroom editing program was one of the core points during the course. Alex has an incredible deep knowledge in giving advises how to edit a picture. Looking back to my previous taken pictures and comparing them to the photos I have taken and edited during the course I see a huge improvement!

Furthermore, with his experience and knowledge, Alex can assist and teach you with any kind of questions about photo equipment! If you have a main personal focus in underwater photography, Alex is happy to go the extra mile and provides you with what you want to learn including following strictly the Padi standards.

It was certainly a high rewarding course and I strongly recommend it!

A great uw photograpgt course for all levels of experience.

I found Alex and Dive4Photos by coincidence while I was doing my PADI Instructor Exam at Crystal Dive Resort.
Before coming to Koh Tao I had bought at ton of gear and my plan was to learn by myself how to use it all. But when I saw the poster for Dive4Photos and the PADI Dive Centre Pro Photographer Course I knew that was the perfect course for me. I told Alex I had a lot of gear and no idea how to even put it together. Alex showed me how to use it all from Macro, Super Macro, Wide Angel, Strobe, No strobes and even Magic Filters. At the end of the course we were supposed to photograph other divers. We had a great session with two divemaster interns, it was a ton of fun 

If you own a camera and underwater housing, Alex is definitely the guy you would want to teach you how to take better underwater photos :D If you don’t own a camera and are unsure if you want to buy some gear or not you should still take the course as Alex will teach you the basics of the gear (you can rent or borrow gear from Alex) and from that knowledge you can decide for yourself later if you want to buy something or not. If you want Alex could even help order the different pieces for you. My wife Wania and ended up buying a underwater housing, macro and wide angles lenses for her camera during the course :)

Simply the best:)

We got all the personal attention we needed, all the info and the guiding  Alex is a very good instructor, the course was fun and educational, and we got so much more out of this three week long course than we would ever imagined. Other similar courses that we’ve looked at that have been three times as expensive, shorter and more people per instructor. I am so great full for the course we had with Alex, my camera is now my best friend and no longer a complicated thing I just cannot figure out :) O`happy day :) And did I mention that we learned a lot? My husband and I did this course together and we really had fun, at times there were some competition between us. Macro, wide angle and taking photos of other divers, they were all good experiences; they all have their positive and negative sides. I thought I was just into macro, but now I have learned that all the other stuff has their attractions too. I`ve also gotten so much better in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop after doing the course with Alex. The course even inspired me to learn more general photo and more underwater photography techniques so I have gone wild on YouTube to learn even more about photo. Overall, we had a superb time; we learned a lot and did not spend too much money.
Thank you Alex.

I've learned a great deal and had a wonderful time doing it, the result and photos I've taken during the course was way better than I'd imagined!!!

Thanks Alex for being one of the most professional and patience instructors I've ever seen. Will come back and do more with you soon!

Thanks Suki for your review. It was a pleasure working with you and it's great to know that, as a Course Director, you still want to learn more about subjects less known to you. Your Instructors will benefit from the extra time, effort and interest you have put in, well done.

Excellent learning with Alex

Alex was an excellent tutor over the course of the 1x1 photo workshop I did with him. Right from dive and camera preparation to the technicalities of shooting underwater and the post processing workflow - very detailed and meticulous insights and am glad to say that I benefited tremendously from it.
