Excellent twin location trip

Well where do I start!! It was a fabulous trip. Aliwal Shoal first, the accommodation was good, rooms where clean and the beds where comfortable not a vast amount of space for clothes etc but we didn't take much so that was ok lol breakfast was toast, cereals, fresh fruit and yogurt (a couple of the guests did complain there were no eggs) didn't bother us. Lunch time food was simple, burgers, chips, salads and sandwiches but it was well prepared and tasty. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. The diving was good, with only four of us at the resort there was plenty of room and we weren't cramped on the boat, the launches were done very professionally and safely. Our dive guide Matt was thorough in his briefings and good at spotting stuff. We met Craig and Shona who own/ run the place briefly, they seemed quite pleasant, we didn't have a lot to do with them really. We dived in the mornings and we had the afternoons to ourselves, they provided a driver Jason who was at our disposal to take us anywhere we wanted to go, a really lovely guy.
The transfer to Mozambique went smoothly, we had several stops to break the journey and arrived at the boarder after about six and half hours. Jason talked us through what to do at the boarder and that also went smoothly. We were picked up by Mike from Ponto Do Ouro and had a 20 minute cross country journey over sand dunes on the back of a truck which was great fun lol The accommodation needs a little bit of tlc but I believe that is in hand. It is very much a family atmosphere there, Mike and Leanne make you feel like part of the family, just loved Mikes sense of humour and he was an extremely competent skipper and guide, it was a very professional but above all friendly place, both Mike and Leanne went out of their way to make sure we had everything we wanted. The breakfast was the same as at Aliwal Shoal, lunch was tuna, beef or chicken wraps or rolls with salad or chips, amazingly tasty. We had two evening meals there, which were excellent, one night was steak (best I've had) and chicken the second night, all beautifully prepared and tasty, the local restaurants were good too, and very good value all within a short walking distance. The diving here was awesome from nudibranch to schools of 40 or more hammerheads, tiger, grey reef, hammerheads and bull sharks and the reef diving was amazing too, difficult to compare to Tofo because it's so different, however, I'm pretty sure Rob and I will be going back to this place again next year, going to put it to the club next week as well

Breathe in.....Breathe out......and Relax....

That's about as taxing as it got during my 7 days by the sea. A perfect retreat away from it all. Fantastic friendly staff, great food and diving all set in a very peaceful environment. Good house reefs, truck dives to local sites and a face to face with an Oceanic out on Elphinstone. I travelled alone but buddied with plenty, a perfect get away.

Wonderful staff and excellent diving

You can go in a tent (as we did - right on the beach) or up to a grand A/C apartment. The house reef is excelllent and the further reaches (by Zodiac) have excellent coral with up to 100% cover (yes, I really mean that). Dives range from 5 metres just off the shore to the reef wall which goes down to about 20metres (but I spent a lot of time at the top of the reeef which is very beautiful) to excoursions (extra cost) to such paces as Elphinstone (which goes down to hundreds of metres as a sheer wall with a platform on the north end at 40 metres from which to view the earky morning sharks and a nice 20 metre platform at the south end to which you are conveyed by a nice drift) and Dolphin reef which has some magical bommies. one of them penetrated by a maze of tunnels at 5 metres. The dive staff are excellent and both safety and environmentally conscious. The food is unlimited, of various national cuisines depending on the day and uniformly excellent and the restaurant staff, both in front and behind the counter, courteous and helpful. The whole organisation runs like clockwork. This is my third time at Marsa Shagra and Marsa Nakari is just as good. Oonas' operation in UK is also first class. Below is a boxfish, two views of a stonefish and what I think is a species of Ovula (a mollusk similar to the cowries).

I keep coming back here, the diving always has something new to offer and the staff (some I have seen at Nakari) were helpful and as friendly and professional as always. I still highly recommend this place, booked through Oonas who were there usual efficient selves as ever :-)

Just what I expected and more. Fantastic week, great crew looking after everyone. Great itinerary, and lovely liveaboard. Shame no sharks but you can't have everything. Great group of people who added to the experience, so much so that we are already looking to book next year. Thanks all.

Back home from Marsa Shagra village

Fantastic week of scuba diving and new friendships in Marsa Shagra village !
A week or so ago, on a rainy Wednesday morning , I left for the airport feeling a bit nervous and anxious !
I was travelling on my own
and I have not been under the water for the last 5 years. I was going to stay in a tent in the desert for next 7 days not knowing anybody !
By now , everybody , including my self, thought I was going a bit mad !!
But now , back home in Hove , I could not wish for a better adventure .
I feel rejuvenated and full of wonderful memories from above and under the water .
In Marasa Shagra I met the most wonderful local people and I made friends with divers from from all over the world - Uk , Argentina ,Czech republic, Germany and probably somewhere else !
At my age of 55 ,
I once again feel like a kid after a summer camp !
Wonderful!
I would like to
Thank you all for making me feel welcome and safe
Thank you for
great dives and good food and thank you for
excellent spirits throughout the week
Special thanks to four though British divers who looked after me as if I was always part on the team !
They will know who they are

Born again diving

Live aboard diving is not as luxurious as some other parts of the world, but the quality of (a) the dive sites (b) the food on the Giamani (c) the knowledge and ability of the dive guides is hard to beat. The highlight of the trip must be the dives at Richelieu Rock: endless streams of predatory trevallies and snappers, clouds of prey fish, then lower down in the water column, the great wealth of macro stuff and diversity of reef life.
The only draw back for me was having to share a cabin with another dive pro of the opposite sex... with only five cabins, this could be a regular problem for solo travellers.

Great location, great diving and great staff

As "mature" divers, we were a little concerned that Marsa Shagra would not be the right place for us. How wrong we were. We stayed in an air-conditioned chalet. Spotless and spacious. The restaurant was wonderful. A great variety of delicious food with very accommodating and friendly staff. The diving was terrific. After an orientation/check dive, the house reef was great. The first time we had experienced unguided diving. We went on several 2-shore dive excursions in the mornings. All the dive guides were very knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble for anyone. Dive sites were varied and really interesting. We met up with very friendly divers from a variety of countries.
Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. We will definitively be back again.

Atlantis Goes All The Way!

Really impressed with the organisation before and during my trip to Atlantis, Puerto Galera in the Philippines. Looked after by staff and crew from the moment I arrived to when I got on the transfer boat at 3.00 am for the mainland. The managers are friendly and helpful to the nth degree and the crew are very experienced and professional. I really enjoyed the diving and learned a lot about the smaller creatures in the sea before heading on to Palau to see the bigger fish. I have two videos of a couple of dives there and every time I watch them, I wish I was back!

quieter than quieter

I was prepared for the long haul bus journey from Hurghada to wadi lahami - but it does take its toll!
I landed in hurghada at 630pm.. and arrived in resort at 1am - after a drop off stop at Shagra.
lahami is by road a further 2 hours south of shagra.

I cant fault the staff, facilities or accommodation at Lahami - all as I expected.
Its a shame the resort had soo few people at it when I was there.
my reasons for diving lahami was solely to visit Fury shoals and the outer reefs - but due to a lack of guests from day 2 of my holiday... (i was the only qualified diver in resort!) I was restricted to diving in shore on the house reef.
Which was disappointing. After diving the outer reefs which were in better condition, better visibility... and saw white tip sharks, turtles....
